Visit the Fair Isle Chairs exhibition from the comfort of your own armchair

The Shetland Museum and Archives are delighted to extend their learning programme online with the launch of a new video exploring the current Fair Isle Chairs exhibition in Da Gadderie. The online programme will be rolled out throughout the year and will enable people to virtually view new exhibitions as well as existing museum displays.

The Fair Isle Chairs film will include local carpenter Eve Eunson, who is hosting the exhibition, speaking to Museum Curator Ian Tait about her exciting project. Eve spent two years researching the history and traditional craft skills used to make the historic chairs, before embarking on making her own beautiful new Fair Isle Chairs. This talk will take viewers on a virtual tour of Eve’s exhibition to discover stories from the past and how Eve researched and learnt to create her new handcrafted pieces.

Yvonne Reynolds Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator said: “During the pandemic, we’ve had to rethink how we can offer visitors, who may not be able to visit the Museum, other ways to enjoy current exhibitions. We would normally have gallery tours, talks and lectures as part of the learning programme. Due to restrictions, we’ve quickly had to adapt how we can engage with our visitors. We hope that people who may not be able to visit at the moment can still enjoy and learn more about our exhibitions. The videos will also create a legacy of exhibitions for years to come.”

Viewers can tune in to watch the video premiere on the Shetland Amenity Trusts YouTube Channel at 7pm on Friday the 30 April. It will also be shared on the Shetland Museum and Archives Facebook and Instagram and pages.

The Fair Isle Chairs will be on display until the end of May with a new exhibition by professional artist and sculptor, Roberta Fulford, to be unveiled in June - anyone unable to visit in person can look forward to a virtual tour.
