VE80 - a night to remember
We had the most incredible evening at the museum on Thursday 8th May, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day in style and spirit.

The building came alive with toe-tapping tunes from Girsie and the Loose Ends, as visitors explored new war-related displays, sampled ration-era treats like “Emergency Bread” thanks to Becky and Mary from Taste of Shetland, and heard from local historian Jon Sandison on Shetland during WW2.

There was a lovely atmosphere as people shared memories, chatted with staff, browsed the displays and enjoyed the music.

Visitors had the opportunity to view war-related objects and military uniforms, and watched a ration cookery demonstration from Taste of Shetland. The 8 o'clocks were a hit too!

From the Boston Two Step to stunning 1940s hairstyles recreated by the talented UHI Shetland students, it was an evening full of community, memory, and spirit.

We ended the night with a torch lighting at Hay’s Dock, part of the nationwide beacon tribute - uniting us all in remembrance under perfect skies.

A quiet moment of reflection

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this evening so special.
