New exhibition - to excite young readers and art lovers

A new exhibition opens this week at the Shetland Museum and Archives. A’ll Tell Dee a Story is the work of local author and self-publisher Ann Marie Anderson, and her show is enhanced through a partnership programme of activities delivered by the Museum and Archives.

The exhibition comprises of over 70 original illustrations from Ann Marie’s Peerie Oorick children’s books, including her new edition, Myrtle and Meenie, which is being released on Saturday 30th November at Mareel.

Ann Marie said “I’m really excited to be launching this exhibition at the Museum and Archives. It’s been a long time in the making, I can’t wait to open the doors and see the reactions from visitors seeing the exhibition for the first time”.

Visitors will discover the miniature world of Ann Marie’s ooriks – the little characters living in rural Shetland – through charming paintings and intricate models. The show also features folklore art by Dirk Robertson, that featured in Ann Marie’s latest book and all the illustrations from her previous books by local artists Jenny Duncan and Jo Anderson.

Shetland Museum and Archives Lifelong Learning Officer Yvonne Reynolds said, “It has been fantastic to work with Ann Marie, and the Gadderie has truly come alive, with something for everyone. We’ll be running a range of storytelling and craft workshops along with a special trail through the museum galleries. Da characters from Ann Marie’s books have been slippit in the museum, encouraging bairns and families to make the connection with real artefacts you will find in the books”.

The exhibition opens on Sunday 31st October 12.00 noon and runs through until January 2022. Visitors can come along anytime during our opening times, with no need to book. The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am - 4.00pm and on Sundays from 12.00 - 5.00pm.
