Festive Events at Shetland Museum and Archives

The Shetland Museum and Archives team is delighted to be launching a range of winter warming events this December to get visitors in the festive spirit. From bairns’ activities, creative crafts, special displays featuring vintage Christmas toys and photographs, there is something for all the family.

The festive fun will kick off on Tuesday 3 December with a return of free Mootie Moose activities: a Christmas Book Bug Special with the Shetland Library, drop-in bairns’ crafts, a scavenger hunt and the Christmas tree light up with Santa. Visitors will have a chance to sample Emma Louise Coffee Shop’s delicious mince pies and Christmas cupcakes too.

Curators Jenny Murray and Tracey Hawkins have put together a vintage Christmas display featuring various Shetland toys and memorabilia from the collections.

There will also be the return of the popular photographic display showcasing a mixture of images from the photo archive, including the Lerwick Post Office family Christmas parties from the 1960s. Visitors are encouraged to come along and help identify faces so that the details can be recorded.

The well-stocked Shetland Museum shop will be full of Christmas gift inspiration too, including beautiful traditional wooden toys as well as locally-made gifts. There will also be the opportunity to buy a range of specially selected vintage black and white prints from the Shetland photo archives, as well as the chance to browse through and buy from the museum’s extensive online bank of images, which can be ordered and collected in time for Christmas.

Yvonne Reynolds, Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator said: ‘We love celebrating Christmas at the Shetland Museum and look forward to welcoming folk to enjoy all that’s on offer. Whether it’s a warming cuppa and cake, festive bairns’ crafts, or a browse through Shetland photos from the archives, there is a fun programme of events lined up. We’re also delighted to announce that we will have late night ‘support local’ shopping on Thursday 5th, 12th and 19th December along with festive treats at Emma Louise’s Coffee Shop.”
