Tours are offered by our Visitor Services Assistants during the summer, and during the year for special events such as Up Helly Aa or Shetland Wool Week.
Gallery tours are free of charge and leave at published times from reception. Scheduled tours are announced on our EVENTS CALENDAR and announcements are made prior to each tour starting, over the public tannoy.
The Highlights tour takes around 45 minutes and covers all of the gallery zones, pointing out key artefacts from each area. For a general introduction to the collections, or for those who have limited time, this is a perfect place to start.
Textile tours are available during the summer, and also during Shetland Wool Week in late September/early October. Tours examine various aspects of our textile heritage, illustrated by our Recognised textile collection. These are sometimes complemented by textile demonstration sessions with our skilled Visitor Services Assistants showing off their spinning and knitting talents.
Curator led tours take the form of our ‘Meet the Experts’ sessions, where members of curatorial staff will discuss their own particular areas of expertise. Previous subjects have included Taatit rugs, German merchants and Dutch fishermen. Shetland during the war, Fantastic Felsite, and our portraiture collection have also been popular topics.
Other tour subjects include: St Ninian’s Isle treasure, origins of Up Helly Aa and Viking life in Shetland.
