The Shetland Museum Photo Archive is a unique resource with over 80,000 images capturing the islands’ life, culture and heritage since the 1800s. Among this rich collection are striking photographs of Shetland’s world-renowned textile traditions—carding, spinning, knitting, weaving and the people whose skills shaped them.
These images not only record the craftsmanship behind garments and patterns but also show how textiles were central to daily life and community identity.
A selection of mounted prints from this exhibition are available to purchase in the Museum shop. Alternatively digital prints are available to order from Shetland Museum and Archives.
The photographic archive continues to grow through generous donations and offers a fascinating window into Shetland’s past. Whether exploring textiles, fishing, crofting or landscapes, each photograph helps preserve memories for future generations and celebrates the creativity and resilience of Shetland people.
