The Shetlanders who Buried Shackleton

Saturday, June 18th 2022 - Thursday, November 30th 2023
Upper Gallery, Shetland Museum

The display marks the death and funeral of Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1922. His remains were taken back to South Georgia by a Shetland sea captain and his six pallbearers were Shetlanders working as whalers on the island. A bronze fragment from one of the wreaths laid on his grave is displayed.
