Display case: Vaila Mae and Arctic Mist

We are delighted to present a model of the sixareen Vaila Mae, made by Robbie Tait in 2021, on display alongside a model of the ‘Maid’ class Arctic Mist built by John Tait (Robbie’s son) in 2017. It is lovely to view them together and to see the traditional skill passed down through the generations.
You can compare the sixareen model with the real thing as the Vaila Mae is berthed at Hay’s Dock during the summer months. Built by Robbie Tait and Jack Duncan in the museum’s boat shed using traditional techniques she is a replica of the nineteeth century Shetland sixareen Industry LK718.
John Tait created his replica model of the Arctic Mist some 50 years after his father built the original ‘Maid’ in 1966.
