This exhibition is a version of the ‘Looking in from the Edge’ (LIFTE) exhibition currently on show in Bremerhaven.
The Shetland display deals with the German merchants who nearly monopolised the Shetland fish trade until 1680. It has sometimes been suggested that Shetlanders played no part in the trade until the Germans were ousted.
But the Shetland exhibition shows how a few local merchants began to play a major role in the trade during the decade and a half before the Germans left.
