The banners are one aspect of ‘Spinning a Yarn’ which was a creative investigation of Fair Isle’s unique knitting patterns. This project started with a footnote stating that the eponymous patterns originated in Iberia having been passed to the islanders by shipwrecked Spanish Sailors in the 1580’s.

The banners capture Landwehr-Traxler’s impressions of Spain and Fair Isle. These pieces use sequences of the patterns she observed during her travels, refracting both traditions through a different medium in order to create new interpretations and understanding. It also allowed her to create a sculptural work referencing the migration of the patterns and the role of the sea as both a benefactor and the dominant resource of the islanders.
