Come along to our informal Shetland Museum Socials running fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm - 3.30pm. Each session will have a heritage theme as the focus. Enjoy a cuppa, have a chat and learn something new!

Trowie Faase Faces - Primary 1-4

Children will sketch their design onto paper before creating their faase face using a variety of crafty materials. Using sheep’s wool, each child will have the opportunity to learn how to card – blending and brushing their wool to the colour and texture they’d like to use for hair, beards etc. for their mask.

SOLD OUT - Sp’OO’ky Ghosts - Primary 1-4

Children will create their own sp’OO’ky ghost picture using sheep ‘oo’ (wool). We will be focusing on how our ancestors and lots of people today use ‘cairders’ to card wool and prepare it so that it is ready to be spun and turned into ‘wirsit’ (yarn). We will then use our freshly carded wool to make ghosts.

Halloween Wirsit Garlands - Primary 5-7

Using Shetland wool and a pompom technique, children will create ghosts and pumpkins to add onto their very own Halloween garland. They will also learn all about Shetland Sheep and the important qualities of their fleece.

Winter Straw Club 2024

Join us for a winter of straw making to conserve this critically endangered craft! This is arranged in a club format with 3 different skills available to choose from- either knotted, stitched or kishie making. You will be asked to select which technique you wish to learn at checkout when you book your space. Each technique has an experienced tutor, Eve Eunson, Samantha Dennis and Leslie Smith, who will guide you through making your chosen project (selected at the first session).
