Viking Activity Day!

Saturday, September 9th 2017 - Sunday, September 24th 2017

Shetland Museum and Archives goes Viking for the day, in association with VisitScotland's year of History, Heritage and Archaeology.

Timetable:

10.00am - 4.00pm: Find the Viking Treasure
Follow the Viking trail through the Museum galleries to discover clues and solve a Viking puzzle

10.00am - 4.00pm: The Vikings have landed!
Viking traders have landed in the Boat Hall. Come and see what they have to trade, have a go at Viking crafts and listen to tales of their adventures. Have a go at making a replica Viking coin (50p charge)

10.00am - 4.00pm: Vikings through the Archives/Ages
Pop into the Archives and study documents and books relating to the Vikings

10.30am - 11.15am -Viking Jewellery Workshop

11.00am - 11.30am: Viking Excavation
Come and join in our Viking archaeology family dig. How many replica Viking artefacts will you discover? How will you record your finds? All will be revealed on the day! (10 spaces per session - repeated at 1.00pm and 3.00pm)

11.00am - 11.20am: Gallery talk by Dr Ian Tait - At Home with the Vikings; domestic life a thousand years ago

11.30am - 11.50am: Gallery Talk by Jenny Murray - Scandinavian style; Viking clothes and jewellery

11.30am - 12.15pm: Thor's Hammer Pendants Workshop

12.30pm - 4.00pm: Family drop-in activities
Viking themed craft activities on offer in the learning room for all the family to take part in

2.00pm: Drumming Workshop

2.00pm - 2.20pm: Gallery Talk by Dr Val Turner - 'Soapstone': why incoming Vikings felt at home here

7.00pm for 7.30pm start - Nordic Evening
An evening of Nordic food, sagas and stories in Hay's Dock Cafe Restaurant
