Celebrating Outwith | The Grieves in Whalsay: people, place and memory

Saturday, June 20th 2026 11:00am - 1:00pm
Shetland Museum and Archives
Join us for a panel discussion led by Dr Colin McIlroy exploring Christopher and Valda Grieve’s years in Whalsay. Bringing together voices from the Whalsay History Group and Shetland Museum and Archives, the conversation will delve into daily life on the island and the relationships the Grieve family built during their time in Shetland. Drawing on local knowledge, archival insight, and shared stories, this session offers a chance to see a more personal side of the Grieves - rooted in place, community, and the landscape that surrounded them.
The discussion will be enriched by contributions from a range of speakers bringing different perspectives and areas of expertise. Marina Irvine will share her research into Valda Grieve’s life and experiences, while Jacqueline Irvine will draw on oral history interviews she recorded in Whalsay in 1992, offering valuable first-hand memories of the community. Mark Smith will explore Hugh MacDiarmid’s poetry and its connections to Shetland, and Amber will draw on her extensive archive research on Valda. Together, their knowledge and research help build a fuller picture of the Grieves’ years in Whalsay and the people and place that shaped their time there.
This event is part of a series of three taking place on Saturday 20 June to celebrate the Outwith exhibition. Book all three events and receive 25% off — the discount will be automatically applied at checkout.
