Evening Talk: Shetland Hand Knitters Association with archivist Brian Smith

Thursday, October 2nd 2025 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Islesburgh Community Centre
Shetland Hand Knitters’ Association was the brainchild of Prophet Smith, secretary of Shetland’s branch of the seamen’s union.
Designed to combat the control of the industry in Shetland by knitwear merchants, the first meeting in 1943 was attended by 34 women delegates from across Shetland. Within a couple of months they had got 4,000 members, 90 per cent of hand knitters in the islands. Historians have more or less ignored the Association. Find out from this talk about its achievements and setbacks during the next 30 years.
