January 1924 saw two events in Lerwick which were utterly different but had a perhaps unexpected connection. One was the unveiling of the Shetland County memorial to the Shetland servicemen who died in World War 1 and the other was Up-Helly-Aa.

One was the commemoration of the tragic deaths of so many, mostly young, men and the other a frivolous carnival with ribaldry, dancing, no doubt drinking (despite the town being ‘dry’) and general merriment. How could they be connected? Join local historian Linda Riddell as she explains that the answer lies in Shetland’s Viking heritage and how it was perceived
