Heritage Connections - Oral History Workshop

Heritage Connections - Oral History Workshop

Monday, November 13th 2023 10:00am - 4:30pm
Shetland Museum & Archives

Have you an idea for an oral history project, but don’t know how to get started? This workshop, delivered by Dr Alison Chand, Oral History Society trainer and teacher at Strathclyde University Oral History Centre, will cover how to get started, what equipment to use, interview dos and don’ts, how to transcribe and summarise interviews and the ethics relating to oral recordings, as well as giving you the opportunity to practise being an interviewer and interviewee.

This training forms part of Heritage Connections, Shetland Amenity Trust and Shetland Heritage Association’s partnership project supported by Museums Galleries Scotland and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Spaces are limited, so we recommend a maximum of 2 members from any heritage group. Following the training, each participant is asked to provide at least one recording (5-30 minutes) which will be shared as part of the Community Archives and Heritage Group Scotland’s Gaps in the Archive project, and local support will be available to help you plan and undertake this by end of January 2024. Attendees will receive a certificate supported by the Oral History Society and Community Archives Heritage Scotland confirming their participation.

This course will also be available on Sunday 12th November at Voe Public Hall available here.
