A Talk with Carol Christiansen: The Story Behind Toevakoddis

Thursday, May 4th 2023 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Shetland Museum Auditorium

To accompany the current Gadderie exhibition Taxcloth: the Toevakoddi Project by artists Hazel Hughson, Barbara Ridland, and Joan Fraser, Curator Carol Christiansen will present a talk on the historical background to Shetland’s toevakoddi sites and why they were important to Shetlanders centuries ago.

The story of the cloth wadmal, and its connection to these sites will be given. How much wadmal Shetlanders had to weave to pay their rentals and taxes, and what happened to it after it was paid will be explored. Along with her colleague Lena Hammarlund, two sites were used to full cloth and Carol will give details of their findings and describe their experiences fulling cloth in several toevakoddis.

This event will be held in the auditorium of the Shetland Museum, followed by a cup of tea/coffee in the learning room and a visit to the Exhibition in the Gadderie.
