Sagas and Seascapes Live in Shetland

Sagas and Seascapes Live in Shetland

Saturday, September 25th 2021 6:30pm - 7:30pm
The Boat Hall, Shetland Museum, Lerwick

Nordic Viola will take you on an extraordinary journey in words and music to the Faroe Islands, Orkney and Shetland, Iceland and Greenland. The islands are bound together by a common seafaring heritage and share musical and cultural connections. In a programme shaped by six months travelling in the region, viola player Katherine Wren shares contemporary reflections, traditional melodies and personal testimonies that are shaped by vast northern landscapes.

Norse stories and landscapes form the inspiration for this concert. Linda Buckley’s “Aud”, written about one of the first Icelandic settlers and her journey from Ireland via the Northern Isles will receive its first live performance in Shetland. Orcadian Gemma McGregor’s “Our Lady of Sorrow and Dangers” draws inspiration from Ron Ferguson’s poem, “Our Lady of Yesnaby.” The ever-changing seascape is depicted in Faroese composer Kári Bæk’s “Wogen” for solo viola and Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen’s clarinet quartet, “Sea of Peace.”

Traditional music from the Far North includes the beautifully haunting Icelandic tune Vísur Vatnsendu Rósu, made famous by Björk, and tunes by Shetland fiddler Margaret Robertson.

We will also feature two tunes by the winning Shetland entrant from our recent Seastories competition, accordionist Victoria Byrne-McCombie.
