Moder Dy Noost Project

Thursday, August 8th 2019 7:00pm - 12:00am
Shetland Museum & Archives Auditorium

Shetland’s maritime heritage, particularly noosts which are simple, often ephemeral boat storage structures are threatened by coastal erosion, human, and animal destruction. These important endangered structures provide us with tangible evidence of a way of life that until relatively recently remained unchanged for almost 1000 years. It has often been said that the sea was the highway upon which every Shetlander travelled. Today all that reminds us of this fact are the deserted farmsteads that are often far from any road but lie close to the sea. The noost is the portal through which we reveal a forgotten maritime life.
