This event is also on at the following times:

This workshop delves into the fascinating world of Shetland fishermen’s ‘lucky’ words. These were special coinages that were once used at sea to avoid mentioning ‘unlucky’ things by name. They were so numerous in the nineteenth century that people sometimes thought the fishermen spoke a distinct ‘haaf language’ while they were away fishing! The event will sketch out the form and origins of the custom, and consider its legacy in the present day. There will be a chance to try out some lucky words for yourself, and an opportunity to share your own ideas about the meanings behind them.

Please note the Wendesday occurence of this event will be hosted in the Unst Boat Haven.
