The next Shetland Boat Week will take place on Monday 5th to Sunday 11th August 2019.

The 2019 programme of events is now published and can be DOWNLOADED here. You can also pick up a copy from many local outlets. The range of tours, trips, activities, talks and exhibitions is impressive and will keep the whole family entertained. To keep up-to-date with the latest news and event announcements follow Shetland Boat Week on facebook.

If you have a traditional Shetland Boat you would like to submit for inclusion in the exhibition at Hay's Dock, please complete and return the appropriate form. Organisers are particularly keen to hear from anyone with a Jimmy Smith boat, or a boat restored by the owner. Applications for display boats will be accepted up to mid July. Traditional Shetland Model Exhibition

9:00am - 10:00pm

Enjoy a stroll along the seafront at Hay's Dock to see a range of Shetland Model boats in various styles and spanning many years. The particularl focus on the Receiver Pier this year is a display of boats made by Jimmy Smith of Allcraft in Lerwick.

Lerwick Waterfront Pirate Hunt

9:00am - 5:00pm

Lerwick town centre waterfront was once the backdrop of smugglers and pirate activities. Follow the clues from the Lodberries to Hay’s Dock and find the pirates. Collect all the clues and win yourself a pirate tattoo to impress your shipmates! Collect entry forms from Tourist Office, Harry’s or Shetland Museum and Archives.

Jimmy Smith Exhibition: The Man, The Boats, The Legend

Jimmy Smith is one of Shetland’s best known boat builders and was the mentor for many of Shetland’s other best known and ‘still ta da fore’ builders. This exhibition includes plans and templates from some of the boats he made as well as other pieces from the Museum collection.

Do you know how traditional rope was made? Come down to Hay’s Dock to see an original rope making machine in action and have a go at turning the handle to make sisal fibres into strong rope!

Brian Chapman has a fascinating collection of original Seagull engines in various stages of repair and restoration. In additional to a display of the engines, Brian will challenge you to start one – do you have what it takes? (demo times daily, but limited)

Maritime Craft Playtime

Create your own maritime themed crafts in the Boat Shed – make a collage picture, a skeety-ploot boat to sail in the tank or design a new sea monster! Suitable for all ages, drop in.

Creel Lotto

12:30pm - 4:30pm

Have a go at hauling a creel and see if you’re lucky enough to score a good catch! Pick a numbered buoy before being taken off to the Shetland Boat Week Creel Ground in a rowing boat to check your creel or prawn trap. 6 numbers available each day.

Row your Boat

12:30pm - 4:30pm

Set off in a boat for a row around the dock. Perfect for beginner hands-on taster sessions or for an enjoyable treat for those more practiced. Suitable for children and adults. Chaperone provided for less experienced rowers.

Blacksmith Demo with Brokkr Forge

2:00pm - 3:30pm

Experience the smells, sound and heat of a real blacksmith forge as Bryden /Jacobson of Brokkr Forge sets up in the Pier Store to make maritime related items such as boat nails, chain or a shackle and hook. Suitable for all ages but children must not be left unattended.

Sail Repair Workshop

2:00pm - 5:00pm

Mark Shiner from Orkney College Maritime Department will lead a workshop in sail repair and traditional canvas techniques. Whether you have a sail to repair or just want to learn the skill, this is sure to be an educational afternoon.

Mousa Isle Guided Walk

6:00pm - 9:00pm

Begin your journey at the historic Sandsayre pier, where the old boatshed, complete with a former ‘flit’ boat, has been developed into a fascinating interpretive centre to provide an insight into the life and times of the local area. Sail over to Mousa for a fascinating and memorable guided tour of the island - which includes a visit to the famous Mousa Broch.

Adrian Duncan Talk - Shetland and the Greenland Whaling

7:00pm - 9:00pm

During the 18th and 19th centuries Shetland played an important role in the Arctic whaling industry. This significant period in Shetland’s whaling history is explored in Shetland and the Greenland Whaling. The book’s author, Adrian Duncan, will tell us more.

Seafood Auction Tour

Take a behind the scenes tour of Lerwick Fish Market and see the electronic fish auction process. Shetland Seafood Auctions will supply protective clothing during the tour. Meet at Viking Bus Station for a short walk to the market. Suitable for all ages.

Making Seachest Beckets

Seachest Beckets are beautiful ornamental pieces with a maritime theme. Learn the techniques required to make your own and develop a collection over time. All materials supplied. (further work will be required following the workshop to complete your becket)

Agnes Kay Charters Whalsay Trip

10:00am - 6:00pm

Climb aboard the Aspire and cruise up the coast aboard the well refurbished ex-fishing boat to the ‘bonnie isle’ of Whalsay. Enjoy a visit to the Heritage Centre and Hanseatic booth. You’ll have lunch aboard and plenty of opportunity for capturing great photos of scenery and wildlife from the sea. An experience not to be missed! Meals and lifejackets supplied.

Following the launch of Shetland and the Greenland whaling author Adrian Duncan will be at The Shetland Times Bookshop to sign copies and discuss his researches. Meet the author and buy a copy of the new book in-store.

Exploding the myths of the 'Nil Desperandum' and 'The Brenda': A talk by Charlie Simpson

Charlie Simpson and Norman Moncrieff have carried out extensive research into the origins and life of both the Nil Desperandum and the Brenda – two well known Shetland Boats. Hear Charlie explain the truth behind the military myths normally associated with these boats.

Eela fishing and dockside BBQ

Take a run off in your own boat with a group for a fun fishing session before heading back to Hay’s Dock and sparking up the BBQ in the pier store to enjoy what we’ve all caught – and enjoy dockside tunes with Maurice Henderson and friends and maritime poetry and tales from Shetland ForWirds. Pre-registration of boats essential.

The Swan - Shetland's Tall Ship

7:00pm - 12:00am

Built in 1900 Shetlands Tall Ship, Swan, has a long and varied career. This talk will highlight its fishing heritage, rescue and restoration, current activities as a sail training and charter vessel and future opportunities.

Dim Riv Harbour Trip

Climb aboard the Dim Riv, a replica Viking longship, for a cruise through Lerwick Harbour, See Lerwick from a different viewpoint and see how many seals you can spot! Lifejackets provided. Depart from Bressay Slip at Victoria Pier.

Head along to Delting boating Club for a chance to take to the water in a small boat. It could be a rowing boat, a small sailing boat or a yacht. Weather dependent. Warm waterproof clothing required. Please not this event is free, but catering will be available for a small charge.

Enjoy a stroll along the seafront at Hay's Dock to see a range of Shetland Model boats in various styles and spanning many years. The particularl focus on the Receiver Pier this year is a display of boats made by Jimmy Smith of Allcraft in Lerwick.

Lerwick Waterfront Pirate Hunt

Lerwick town centre waterfront was once the backdrop of smugglers and pirate activities. Follow the clues from the Lodberries to Hay’s Dock and find the pirates. Collect all the clues and win yourself a pirate tattoo to impress your shipmates! Collect entry forms from Tourist Office, Harry’s or Shetland Museum and Archives.

Jimmy Smith Exhibition: The Man, The Boats, The Legend

Jimmy Smith is one of Shetland’s best known boat builders and was the mentor for many of Shetland’s other best known and ‘still ta da fore’ builders. This exhibition includes plans and templates from some of the boats he made as well as other pieces from the Museum collection.

Have a go at hauling a creel and see if you’re lucky enough to score a good catch! Pick a numbered buoy before being taken off to the Shetland Boat Week Creel Ground in a rowing boat to check your creel or prawn trap. 6 numbers available each day.

Row your Boat

Set off in a boat for a row around the dock. Perfect for beginner hands-on taster sessions or for an enjoyable treat for those more practiced. Suitable for children and adults. Chaperone provided for less experienced rowers.

Browse photos from the height of the fishing industry, read more about the ongoing placenames project and links with Moder Dy looking at noost locations. Learn more about the hayday of boat building in Burra and stories from those in the naval services.

ETV Open Day - 'Ievoli Black'

HM Coastguard is holding an open day giving visitors the chance to go behind the scenes and explore the UK’s Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) ‘Ievoli Black’. (Please note the ship is subject to a 30 minute ‘on-call’ response at all times so opening times may be affected)

Noss Boat Trip with the Mousa Boat

A delightful three hour boat trip leaving Sandsayre Pier for a cruise up to Noss spotting wildlife on the way. On arrival at Noss, the boat will take passengers under the cliffs of the Nature Reserve for an unforgettable experience. Suitable for all ages. Shetland boat Week Sea Parade
