Events

Peerie Boat Week 2018 will take place on 17th, 18th and 19th August, with some additional events in the week leading up to these dates.

The 2018 programme is available online now! Many events are drop-in and free to attend, but please note that some do require booking and the details are available below. Tickets for all events, where required, can be bought online at www.thelittleboxoffice.com/smaa or by calling into Shetland Museum and Archives reception, 01595 741562.

2017 event

There were 55 different events in the 2017 programme which ranged from exhibitions, talks, demonstrations, and boat trips, to tours and activities. The Sercro NorthLink Ferries Boatbuilding project was also taking place every day in the Shetland Museum Boat Shed.

Shetland Seafood Auctions Experience

View the electronic fish auction process before taking a tour of the Lerwick fish market in full swing. Shetland Seafood Auctions will supply protective clothing during the tour. Meet at Shetland Museum and Archives car park for a short walk along to the market. Suitable for all ages.

Shipwreck Gallery Talk

Collections Assistant, Laurie Goodlad, leads an informative gallery talk in the maritime section of the Museum Galleries. Hear stories of shipwrecks round the Shetland coast, and see objects salvaged from these sites. Departs from Reception.

Row your Boat

Great opportunity to get out and row your own boat in the safe waters of the Dock area. Suitable for all ages, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Hay's Dock Boat Biographies - a walking tour with Dr Ian Tait

Museum Curator, Dr Ian Tait leads a guided tour of the boats on display around Hay's Dock from the Museum collection. Hear the history of each craft including it's past use and information about the builder. Departs from reception.

A Kist of Treasures

11:00am - 1:00pm

Come and find out about some of the hidden treasures of Shetland Museum and Archives maritime heritage, from boat-carved stones, to ditty boxes brought from afar. Share your ideas for Shetland's future maritime heritage in the making and create your own kist to be  featured in a new online exhibition. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ocean Kinetics ROV Demonstration

Join Ocean Kinetics staff as they demonstrate the impressive abilibities of the Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) on the seabed around Hay's Dock.

LHD Netstore Tours and demos

Visit the LHD netstore to see how commercial fishing nets are made. LHD staff will be on hand to demonstrate net mending and splicing skills and answer questions.

Mousa Sound Cruise and Tour

Cruise Mousa Sound taking in the sights of the Laird's House, copper mine, powder house and Burland Broch. Watch out for seals and take advantage of the excellent photo opportunities with Mousa Broch in the background as you explore the area with expert guides. Suitable fo all ages. Keynote Lecture - 'The Headscarf Revoutionaries' by Brian W Lavery, guest of the Shetland branch of the Nautical Institute.

7:00pm - 9:00pm

In the "Dark Winter" of 1968, fifty-eight Hull trawlermen died when three ships sank in as many weeks. The Triple Trawler Disaster sparked a fishwives' uprising that took on the Establishment and won. No more would they stand by and watch the industry that gave them their living kill their men. Hear Brian W. Lavery recount this powerful piece of history. With thanks to the local branch of the Nautical Institute for bringing Mr Lavery to Shetland to deliver this talk.
