Shetland Boat Week
A week long celebration of Shetland's outstanding maritime heritage. Shetland Boat Week 2020 will take place from Saturday 1st August to Sunday 9th August.
Shetland Boat Week 2020 - Saturday 1st August to Sunday 9th August
A family friendly event with something for everyone from the expert maritime enthusiast to those taking their first tentative trip out onto the water.
Many generations of Shetlanders have made their living on or around the sea and the links with maritime and related marine industries are as important today as they always have been. Shetland Boat Week is an opportunity to showcase this heritage and see how modern ships compare with those of a previous generation.
The event is inspired by Shetland’s rich maritime heritage, aims to encourage and promote a passion for traditional Shetland boats, and a growing participation in keeping the sailing, boat building and other historic skills alive.
2020 Shetland Boat Week Programme
We are currenlty working on an exciting programme of events for Boat Week this year. It is the 'Year of Coasts and Waters' so we are planning new and exciting acitivities in addition to the usual favourites.
You can view the 2019 programme here.
Get involved in Shetland Boat Week
Community groups and maritime related groups or businesses are encouraged to take part in Shetland Boat Week by providing tours of their premises, delivering talks, slideshows or other events to share knowledge and experiences. If you would like to get involved then please get in touch.
Sail Training Shetland and the Swan
This year Shetland's historic tall-ship, Swan, will be a key part of the event. Collaborating with Sail Training Shetland to offer sail trainees an "Adventure Sail North" starting in Ullapool and ending in Lerwick to kick of the Boat Week celebrations, she will also work with the Amenity Trust to offer themed day sails during boat week.
The "Adventure Sail North" is one of Sail Training Shetland's most ambitious projects so far, bringing young people from Shetland and mainland Scotland together to embark on an adventure sail of a lifetime. 2020 is the Year of Coasts and Waters, part of the VisitScotland themed years initiative, and the Trust have been working in collaboration with partners to develop an exciting programme for the event.
