Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023

As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023 we wanted to shine a light on Jordan Clark, who is one of two staff currently working his way through the Modern Apprenticeship in Museum and Galleries Technician at the Shetland Museum.

Jordan Clark

Jordan joined us two years ago and comes from an arts and creative background.

He has long had a passion for Shetland folklore and the significance of storytelling for our cultural heritage.

As part of Jordan’s career development at the museum he has recently completed a brilliant new Sea Folklore display case which takes a closer look at some of the customs and beliefs associated with physical objects such as knives and fishing weights and the lengths folk would go to avoid curses and bad luck at sea.

The Shetland Archives was key to Jordan’s research where he spent time with the archivists exploring folklore records and publications; while the museum curators suggested various artefacts for him to focus on.

The result is a fascinating display which brings an engaging new approach to the subject sharing Shetland’s intangible cultural heritage in tangible ways.

Come in and see the case for yourself and uncover some of the stories from above and below the ocean.
